Man seriously injured after car burst into flames on M66
The Fiat 500 had crashed into cones and a barrier moments before.
Police investigating a serious crash which closed the M66 overnight are appealing for dash cam footage and witnesses as they try to piece together what happened.
A red Fiat 500 burst into flames on the southbound carriageway at Junction 2 at around 11.30pm after colliding with some cones and a barrier in an area of roadworks.
A silver VW Golf and Ford Transit also travelling on the stretch avoided a collision but an Audi A3 was involved in a minor crash with the Fiat as it tried to avoid the cones and other cars.
The 47-year-old driver of the Fiat 500 was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries, where he remains in a serious condition.
Police constable Martin Davies of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A man is now in hospital with serious injuries and my thoughts are with him as he recovers from this incident.
“That stretch of the M66 was closed for a number of hours last night and as our enquiries continue, we need the public’s help to ensure we have a full picture of what happened.
“I’m asking for anyone who was travelling along the M66 late last night that has dash-cam footage, or information that could help this investigation, to share this with police.”
