A man has been sentenced for killing his mother in Stockport. 30 year old David Brotherton of Redwood Drive in Bredbury, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and sentenced to a hospital order today. At 11am on New Year’s Eve last year, police were called to Redwood Drive in Bredbury, after a woman was discovered by relatives, with stab wounds. When officers went to the house, they discovered the body of 60-year-old Sandra Brotherton.

She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

David Brotherton, her son, was later arrested and charged with her murder.

A post-mortem examination concluded Mrs Brotherton died from blood loss as a result of multiple stab wounds.

Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe said:

"David Brotherton stabbed Sandra in a frenzied attack, multiple times. David has a history of mental health problems and was clearly not well at the time of this incident. He has today been convicted and sentenced for this crime which has devastated a family.

“The family have had to come to terms with the shock and distress of losing Sandra and I hope they can start to come to terms with what has happened.”
