Man's prison sentence increased by Court of Appeal

A Manchester man, who stabbed an innocent bystander in the neck outside a nightclub, has been given an increased prison term.

Zaccai Cliff was convicted of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm in Manchester Crown Court in October last year after he stabbed a man over a disagreement over a cigarette at a nightclub in Rusholme. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

At a hearing today, the Court of Appeal quashed this sentence and raised Cliff’s jail term to 8 and a half years’ imprisonment.

Speaking after the hearing, Solicitor General Robert Buckland said:

“This was an unprovoked attack and the victim is very lucky the wound did not end up costing him his life. Even so, the attack has left the victim with scarring on his neck.

“Attacks of this nature are cowardly and I’m glad the Court has seen fit to raise his sentence.”
