A man from Oldham has been jailed for 10 years for causing the death of a man by dangerous driving.

At around 11.30pm on Saturday 15 October 2022, officers were called to reports of a serious collision between a vehicle and pedestrian on Oldham Road.

Earlier that day, officers out on patrol came across a black Audi A1 that was driving in an erratic manner.

The officers attempted to pull over the vehicle, but the driver - 22 year old Nathan Quinn - made off leading to a short pursuit, which ended because officers simply couldn't keep up.

A short time later the Audi hit an Automatic Number Place Recognition (ANPR) camera which alerted officers to the location and direction in which the vehicle was travelling.

It was established that the vehicle was being driven at more than double the 30mph speed limit in that area.

Whilst travelling along Oldham Road, the Audi ran a red light and hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road at the designated pedestrian crossing at the time.

A 37-year-old man suffered critical injuries and sadly died in hospital a short time later.

Witnesses at the scene told officers that the vehicle involved in the collision had failed to stop and continued to drive towards Oldham’s town centre.

The driver of the Audi A1 was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

Today (Wednesday 20 December 2023) Nathan Quinn of Healds Green was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

Quinn was also issued with a further disqualification from driving for 4 years to commence when released from prison.

Detective Constable Liam Carolan from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:

“This case is a tragic incident where a husband and father of two young children has lost his life due to the idiocy of Nathan Quinn.

“Mr Quinn thought he was untouchable and it has ultimately cost the life of a 37-year-old man who was simply crossing the road. Not only did he not stop when approached by the police, he continue to travel at speeds more than double the signposted speed limits in that area while under the influence of alcohol.

“The victim’s family have had to wait more than a year for this case to reach trail, and I am glad that we have played a part in bringing the killer of their loved one to justice.”
