Man Jailed Over Death Of Pedestrian In Ardwick

A man’s been for causing death by careless driving, when he hit and killed a pedestrian while drunk in Ardwick.

33 year old Shujait Hussain of Reynell Road in Longsight pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink, causing death by driving a vehicle whilst disqualified, and causing death by driving a vehicle uninsured.

He’s been sentenced to five years and 8 months at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square.

Between 5.15am and 5.30am on Wednesday 11 March 2015, Mr. Hussain was driving a silver Vauxhall Vectra was driving south east along Downing Street.

At the junction with Ardwick Green he lost control and hit 45-year-old William Kwaku Afanyi.

Hussain fled, leaving the vehicle and William who had been thrown into the grounds of the park - at the scene.

A passing member of the public found William and the damaged car and called the emergency services.

William was taken to Salford Royal Hospital, where he sadly died Sunday 5 April 2015.

Police Sergeant Mark Thomas from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:

“Hussain was a disqualified driver and over the legal limit yet still decided to get into his car that morning and drive. He lost control and hit Mr Afyani as he made his way to work.

“To compound matters further, Hussain did not phone the emergency services following the collision and left the scene.

“My heart goes out to Mr Afyani’s family who have been left with a huge gap in their lives that will never be filled. I do hope today’s sentencing will go towards healing some of the pain they have been suffering from over the last few months.”
