A man has died in a crash in Bolton after failing to stop for police in the early hours of this morning.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was behind the wheel of a white Volkswagen Golf and was travelling along Manchester Road at the time of the incident.

Officers started pursuing the car at around 1am, before losing sight of it for a short time. They then found the vehicle crashed into a lamp post on the approach to the Chequerbent Roundabout in Westhoughton.

The driver sadly died at the scene and the incident has now been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.

Inspector Danny Byrne, of Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Sadly a man has lost his life as a result of this collision and his family will be supported by specially trained officers.

"As enquiries progress, I would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with any information that could assist our investigation to please get in touch.''

He added a number of road closures will be in place in the area throughout Friday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
