Man critically injured after being hit by a car

A man is critically ill in hospital after he was hit by a car in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

At around 4.15pm on Sunday, a Skoda Octavia was travelling along Bolton Road heading towards Ashton in Makerfield town centre, when it hit a 20-year-old man who was crossing the road.

The man was then thrown into a Volkswagen Caddy Van, which was stationary on Bolton Road waiting to turn right at the junction with Bolton Road and Bryn Road South.

The 20-year-old suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition with life threatening injuries.

A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

He has been bailed until 18 January 2016 pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Mark Thomas from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:

“We are asking for any witnesses that were in the area at the time of this collision to please get in touch with us.

“Our thoughts are with this man and his family at this very difficult time and we are working to establish exactly what has taken place here, so we can provide his family with details of what has happened.”
