A man groomed by former Manchester City scout Barry Bennell is worried abuse still happens in sport today.

David Lean was abused by Bennell after staying at his home for an FA-endorsed training session.

David was a guest speaker at the launch of the NSPCC's new campaign in Manchester, to protect children in sporting environments.

David said: "I just think it's still silent, it's the silent subject which is why it's allowed to continue. People don't talk about this often enough.

"People who think this has gone away are very wrong.

"There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that this could be going on today within junior sports at any level."

The NSPCC's launched the new campaign aimed at safeguarding children in sport - by giving parents, coaches and organisations the tools and knowledge to make sure young people are protected.

David said: "Let us be brutally honest around this, most abuse is taking place within the family home, so they need that safe environment, that safe place, that trusted individual, to possibly open up to.

"That sports club and that sports coach could be that person, so it's important that we know how to deal with that when they come in, and that the sports coach feels comfortable around that situation if a disclosure does come in."

The NSPCC said: "Look for a sports club, group or activity that takes the safety and wellbeing of your child seriously. Always check if the club or organisation have the right safeguarding policies and procedures in place.

"Remember, it’s never wrong to ask for more information when it comes to children's and young people's safety, wellbeing and safeguarding. Organisations should welcome questions about their activities and policies and should have answers on hand if you ask."
