A man has been charged in connection with a fatal collision on the M62 in 2021.

At around 11.35pm on Friday 24 September, it was reported that a Black Audi A3 had collided with the central reservation between junctions 7 and 8 (Manchester bound), and there was a subsequent collision involving a Silver Mercedes SUV.

Merseyside Police, North West Motorway Patrol Group, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service attended the scene.

A 35-year-old woman driver of the Audi was treated by paramedics at the scene, but sadly died as a result of the injuries she sustained. Her family have been supported by specially trained officers throughout this case and ask for their privacy to be maintained.

As part of a complex investigation by the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit, Gary Toomey, 36, of Hollin Hey Road, Bolton, Greater Manchester has now been charged with Cause death by dangerous driving.

Toomey will appear later today (Friday 22 March) at Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates Court, Derby Square, Liverpool.
