Man car-jacked by pretend car buyer in Failsworth

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was carjacked at gun point in Failsworth – and then dragged along the road.

Just after midday today, Tuesday 12th January, police were called to Ashton Road East, Failsworth to reports of a carjacking.

Officers attended and established that the victim had agreed to meet with a man to sell him a black Mini Cooper, and they were both were sat inside the car when the man pulled out a gun and told him to hand over the log book.

The victim was then told to get out of the car as the offender climbed into the driver’s seat and began to drive along Ashton Road East in the direction of Newton Heath.

As the car was setting off, the victim attempted to stop the offender by grabbing onto the near side of the vehicle and was dragged along the road for a short distance resulting in him sustaining cuts and bruises.

He was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The offender is described as a white man with a bald head and a short grey beard and he wearing a black bubble jacket.

Detective Sergeant Darren Grafton of GMP’s Oldham Division said:

“This is a very shocking incident and, as we do with all incidents involving firearms, we are treating this with the utmost seriousness.

“I know something like this can cause a lot of concern however I would like to stress that we believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider threat to the public.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen a black Mini Cooper driving suspiciously in the Oldham or north Manchester areas so if you have any information then please contact police.”
