A Manchester hospital has now de-scaled a 'major internal incident' just as a 48 hour strike was beginning by junior doctors.

Wythenshawe Hospital was dealing with an unprecidented demand on beds and its Accident and Emergency department and asked staff to ensure that all patients who could be safely discharged are sent home.

Silas Nicholls, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer, University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust said: "Our top priority, at all times, is the safety and care of patients and UHSM has robust plans in place to ensure patients who need urgent or emergency care will continue to be seen and treated as quickly as possible.

"All postponed appointments or operations will be rearranged. If you have a query regarding your appointment please call 0161 291 5197.

"You can support us by keeping A&E free for those patients who require urgent attention for a serious or life threatening situation and by accessing alternative healthcare professionals such as pharmacists, GPs, Dentists, Walk-in services, calling NHS 111 or using NHS Choices."
