People in Hyde have been evacuated from their homes, after a huge fire broke out at a building on Stockport Road.

Emergency services were called to the blaze just after 9.30pm yesterday (Monday 22 January), with eleven fire engines deployed.

The property has been described as a 'commercial building'.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: 'Just after 9.30pm yesterday (Monday 22nd January) firefighters were called to reports of a building on fire on Stockport Road, Hyde.

'Eleven fire engines from across Greater Manchester, plus two aerial appliance units and a command support unit, all arrived and worked at the scene which involved a commercial building.

'Crews wore breathing apparatus and worked through the night to extinguish the fire, including helping to evacuate nearby properties. Operations have been scaled back this morning, but GMFRS remain in attendance.'

Residents who weren't evacuated were asked to keep their windows and doors closed, because of the plumes of smoke coming from the blaze.

At this time, there are no reports of any injuries.
