Homes evacuated as bomb squad seen in Failsworth

Police are warning people to stay away from the area surrounding Ellesmere Street

People have been allowed to return to their homes after a bomb disposal squad was called to Failsworth on Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to what was described as an "ongoing incident" in Ellesmere Street.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "Emergency services are currently responding to an ongoing incident on Ellesmere Street in Failsworth.

"A cordon is in place while enquiries are ongoing.

"Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) have been tasked to attend the scene and inspect the property.

"As a precaution, several houses in the area have been asked to evacuate while this work continues.

"People are being asked to avoid Ellesmere Street and its surrounding areas."

A cordon was lifted around an hour later.
