A street in Rochdale's been evacuated after police discovered suspicious items inside a house.

Emergency Services were called to Ashfield Road earlier this afternoon.

Police were initially called to reports of concerns for welfare of a person inside a property, but officers later discovered a number of items of concern.

They have since called in the bomb squad.

The force haven't said what those items are, but it's reported they could be Second World War era weapons.

In a statement, GMP say a number of properties have been evacuated as a precaution:

"Emergency services are currently responding to an ongoing incident on Ashfield Road in Rochdale.

"Responding to a concern for welfare at a property, officers discovered a large amount of suspicious items inside.

"Emergency services remain on the scene and a cordon is in place while enquiries are ongoing.

"Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) have been tasked to attend the scene and inspect the property.

"As a precaution, several houses in the area have been asked to evacuate while this work continues.

"People are being asked to avoid Ashfield Road and its surrounding areas."
