Man sentenced for manslaughter of his mother in Gorton
Benjamin Obinim was sentenced to a hospital order with restrictions

Benjamin Obinim (13/07/2002) of Barnard Road, Gorton has been sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court for the manslaughter of his mother and two offences of wounding with intent on two of his family members at their home on August 18 2024.
Benjamin previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and to two wounding's.
He was sentenced to a hospital order with restrictions in respect of his previous guilty pleas.
On the night of the incident, police received several calls reporting that a man was attacking his family with a knife.
Upon arrival, officers found Obinim's mother unconscious. She was later pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple stab wounds.
His father was discovered with severe stab wounds and was in hospital for a lengthy period with serious injuries.
Obinim's sister also suffered multiple stab wounds and received hospital treatment. Two other siblings managed to escape unharmed.
The police investigation obtained witness testimonies from neighbours and family members who detailed the sequence of events, describing Obinim's violent behaviour and the attempts of family members to intervene.
Enquiries also revealed that Obinim's mental health had deteriorated significantly prior to the attack on his family.
Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe, from GMP’s Major Incident Support Unit, said: "This was a tragic act of extreme violence that has deeply affected the community.
"Our thoughts are with the victims and their family as they continue to recover from this horrific ordeal.
"The incident left the Gorton community in shock, with neighbours and residents expressing their condolences and support for the Obinim family.”
