GMP send out drink drive warning ahead of England’s Euro semi-final

Police across Greater Manchester are warning football fans about the dangers of drink driving amid fears that England’s EURO 2020 semi-final could spark an increase in drivers using their vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Supporters are expected to cram into pubs and bars across the city centre to watch if Gareth Southgate’s men can reach a major tournament final for the first time since 1966.

Extra officers are expected to patrol the roads of Greater Manchester to hunt down anybody driving over the legal limit.

Ahead of the 8pm kick-off at Wembley, Inspector Jonathan Shilvock from Greater Manchester Police has called on fans to plan their evening in advance.

"I'm aware that people want to go out and enjoy themselves, but they must be responsible. People should plan ahead as much as possible and use public transport.

"Planning is essential so they don't make any silly decisions which could affect themselves or someone else for the rest of their life.

"Drink-driving is a clear danger to both the driver and to other people on the road. You could face killing yourself or somebody else. It's so impactive on many lives, and yet it is extremely avoidable.

"I'd ask people not to take the risk. Anybody found guilty of drink-driving can face a lengthy disqualification from driving, and the shame and embarrassment that can come with that."

In the most recent data, it's believed that one in five fatal collisions on Greater Manchester's roads involved drink/drug driving.
