Firefighters remain on the scene after huge blaze close to iconic music venue

Four fire engines remain on the scene this morning after a major blaze at a knitwear factory in Ardwick.

Crews were called to tackle the fire shortly before 7pm last night.

At its peak, smoke could be seen from miles away, with one flight attendant on a plane landing at Manchester Airport reporting being able to see the plume from the jet.

Local residents were urged to keep their windows and doors closed as dozens of firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control.

More than 50 firefighters in total were sent to the scene.

This morning, four engines remain on Stockport Road and crews will assess the building for any structural damage.

Stockport Road has reopened but Hyde Road heading out of Manchester is still closed, as is Devonshire Street.

Group Manager Mark Threader, who is in charge of the incident said: "But our crews safety is exceptionally important. Please remain patient - firefighters are continuing to work tirelessly in tough conditions and will be here through the night, and possibly over the next couple of days."

There is no information on the cause of the fire yet.
