Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that there is "no criminality" after suspected remains were found in Tameside.

A member of the public had discovered what they believed to be human remains in a graveyard in Dukinfield early on Sunday morning (September 15th).

Officers from the force were called to the scene on Park Road, and investigations into the remains were launched.

Following initial lines of enquiry, it has been determined that the remains were historical and had been brought up due to local wildlife.

Tameside Council and Greater Manchester Police both remain at the scene to work together with any information now being passed onto the local authority.

Speaking following the announcement, Detective Inspector Christopher Dean form the Tameside branch of the force thanked the public immensely for their patience.

"Our enquiries alongside Tameside Council and the Coroner’s Office have concluded that no criminality has taken place and these bones have resurfaced due to wildlife in the local area.

"We will continue to work with the local authority and our officers will continue to assist them with scene management."
