According to the PDSA, the causes of pet obesity are fairly straightforward: pets are being fed too much and exercised too little.

K9 Swim hydrotherapy centre in Clayton Bridge, has seen an influx of obese dogs - and offers sessions to help paunchy pooches shed the pounds.

Hydrotherapist Marti Wood, explains that, in terms of how much energy dogs use, a five-minute swim is equivalent to a five-mile walk.

Canine hydrotherapy also involves the use of water for pain relief and treatment for joint problems.
