Congestion warning for Manchester

Motorists urged to plan ahead

Published 6th Jan 2017

Another round of major roadworks will get underway in Manchester on Monday (9 January) with transport bosses warning there’s an increased likelihood of congestion in the city centre.

People are being encouraged to plan ahead and allow more time for their journey.

A full closure of the A34 Brook Street - the section between Upper Brook Street and Princess Street - will get under way. The closure will enable Select Property Group and Bruntwood to carry out essential utility connections as part of the redevelopment of the former BBC site. Known as Circle-Square the work is a major undertaking and will take just over four weeks to carry out. The completion date is Sunday 12 February.

Also, with the opening of Metrolink’s Second City Crossing approaching, new and permanent changes to some city centre streets will alter the way general traffic can use them. To accommodate the new tram lines, changes to road layouts will come into effect on Cross Street, Albert Square and Princess Street around the Portland Street area on Sunday 8 January.
