A large fire has ripped through the top floor of a disused mill in Stockport.

Firefighters rushed to the building on Compstall Road just after 9:30pm on Friday.

At its height, crews from fire engines were tackling the blaze.

Although the fire was extinguished on Friday night, a cordon around Compstall Mill remained in place on Saturday morning as firefighters dampened down.

It's believed nobody was injured.

A Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: "At around 9.40pm on Friday 1 March, GMFRS crews were called to reports of a fire at a derelict mill on Compstall Road, Stockport.

"Five fire engines from Marple, Offerton, Hyde, Whitehill and Stockport fire stations quickly attended the incident. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the fire, which had spread to the top floor of the mill.

"A cordon is in place and Compstall Road is closed near the incident. People should avoid the area if possible.

"Firefighters remain at the scene dampening down the remaining hot spots. GMFRS will continue working alongside other emergency service crews to make the scene safe.”
