A 15-year-old boy has died after an electric bike he was riding crashed into an ambulance, shortly after being followed by police.

At around 2pm on Thursday afternoon, officers began following the teenager along Fitzwarren Street in Salford, onto Lower Seedley Road.

But bollards prevented the police vehicle from continuing to follow the e-bike.

A short time later, a crash happened involving the e-bike and an ambulance on Langworthy Road. The teenage boy riding the e-bike sadly died.

Greater Manchester Police said the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct who are now leading the investigation. The force said this was in line with normal proceedings.

A cordon was still in place on Langworthy Road on Thursday evening along with a number of emergency service vehicles.

An ambulance with a smashed windscreen was earlier pictured at the scene.

In a statement, GMP said their "thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who tragically died."
