Aunty Says Nephew Has Been Treated Unfairly By School Over Haircut

Published 22nd Sep 2015

The auntie of boy who was sent home from school in Manchester all because of his Sergio Aguero haircut has says she feels he's been treated unfairly.

Angela Neild's 11 year-old nephew Kyle was taken out of lessons at Astley Sports College in Dukinfield even though he already had that style when he started the new term.

Angela says it wasn’t fair that her nephew- who she’s the guardian of- was taken out of school on Monday afternoon, weeks after first sporting the haircut at school.

She says she’s a meeting planned with the school to discuss the issue.

Astley Sports College have issued the following statement:

Astley Sports College’s ‘High Expectations No Excuses Uniform Policy’

Astley Sports College’s students enjoy the compliments of their smart appearance.

Headteacher Mr Murphy said, “I make no excuses for our High Expectations for every student at Astley Sports College. In preparing students for the real world, we expect them to have the correct uniform. Employers expect the same.”

“Uniform is important to us and we make no excuses for that. Our parents and students support us, as does our local community. We receive many compliments on how smart our students look. “

Our policy for uniform is very clear:

Hair Styles

‘Steps’, ‘lines’, shaving the sides or all of the head or other variations of these hair styles are unacceptable in this school

Shoes

Black shoes (see shoe guidance document).

Staff speak to students with respect and many students, parents and agencies praise our work outside the formal curriculum.

For any student who arrives in school dressed inappropriately then we request support from home. Normally a child will go home, following the phone call to parents, to rectify the issue and then arrives back in school within the hour.

Some students do not have the correct footwear and we then either give or loan the student the appropriate footwear. Full attendance is essential for students to reach their true potential.

Further guidance can be found in student’s individual planners and in our Climate for Learning Policy available from the school website.
