Airport Disaster Remembered

Survivors of the 1985 British Airtours Flight M28 tragedy, which claimed the lives of 55 people are attending a memorial service today at Manchester Airport.

The tragedy which took place on this day 30 years ago occurred when the plane that was setting off for Corfu caught fire on the runway.

The incident led to changes in airport safety including the seat layout and the evacuation methods on planes.

Ken O’Toole, Managing Director of Manchester Airport said:

“30 years on, our thoughts, sympathy and sorrow are still very much with those who lost their lives, were injured, their relatives, and the many brave individuals involved in the rescue operation.

"The stories of heroism and stoicism that have emerged from the horror of that day humble us all, and are never far from the Airport's thoughts."
