A man believed to be in his thirties has died following a crash at around 7.50pm on New Year's Eve.

Officers rushed to the scene on Wellington Road South and found a BMW 2 Series had collided with an oncoming motorcycle as the car turned right from the A6 onto Longshut Lane.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital, but despite the best efforts of emergency staff, he died a short time later.

Police say his next of kin has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

A 36-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing death by driving without due care and attention. She remains in police custody for questioning.

The road was closed for accident investigation work but has since been reopened.

Constable Phillip Shaw, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A woman is in custody but our enquiries are ongoing and we would like to hear from anyone with information or dash cam footage.

“We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who saw the car or a motorcycle in the area in the minutes before the collision as we believe they may be able to assist us with our investigation.

“If this is you, I would encourage you to contact us as soon as possible”.
