Published 13th Nov 2015

Police are investigating five suspected child snatch attempts - in just three days in South Manchester and Trafford.

A warning has been issued to parents and schools after youngsters were targeted in Wythenshawe, Sale and Timperley - and police patrols have been stepped up.

The incidents happened as follows:

  • On Tuesday 10th November, a 14 year old girl was approached by a man in a car as she walked on Crossacres Road in Crossacres at quarter to 11. He told her to get in before driving off. - At 8:15am on Wednesday 11th November, a 13 year old girl was approached by a man in a van, as she walked on Riddings Road in Timperly. - A few minutes later, a man tried to talk to an 11 year old girl as he drove past her on Swanage Avenue, Brooklands. - At 4:30 that day, an 11 year old boy was chased by a man in Bideford Drive in Baguley. - The final report was on Thursday the 12th November when a 14 year old girl was followed by a man on Altrincham Road in Baguley.

The descriptions range from an Asian man in his 40s, driving a silver people carrier, to a white man, 5ft 7inches tall, wearing a bubble jacket.

Detective Inspector Tony Lea said:

“We are currently investigating these reports and would ask any parent who believed their child may have been approached to call police as soon as possible.

“At this moment in time, although the descriptions differ, we are looking into the possibility they may be linked and I would urge parents to be vigilant.

“Each time, the victim has done the right thing by running off and telling their mum or dad.

Understandably, people will be worried by these reports but I can reassure them we have stepped up patrols in those areas and are determined to find those responsible.

“Naturally I would always encourage parents and guardians to ensure that their children are safety conscious and aware of their surrounding when outside without an adult.

“Where possible they should walk in groups and be careful talking to strangers.”
