We are now well into award season and the Oscar nominations were announced earlier this week. With this announcement we thought we'd take a look at everything you need to know about the Oscar nominations and the awards ceremony itself, which are officially called the Academy Awards.

When were the Oscar nominations announced?

The Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday 23rd January with a live stream on YouTube. The Shape of Water leads the way with 13 Oscar nominations, with British actors Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis and Daniel Kaluuya all being nominated for Best Actor. When will the Oscars 2018 take place?

The Oscars take place on Sunday 4th March 2018.

The Oscars will take place in the The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, USA.

The Oscars will be broadcast around the world in 225 countries and territories worldwide. Last year in the UK the awards ceremony was shown by Sky Cinema. This year no broadcast details have yet been confirmed.

Why does everyone call it the Oscars, when it is actually called the Academy Awards?

The infamous gold statuette is actually called the Academy Award of Merit, and in 1939 the Academy Awards officially adopted the nickname, the Oscars. Although the actual reason for the nickname is unknown, legend has it that an Academy librarian said it looked like her Uncle Oscar.
