Wembley Park: Work on new steps nearing completion - days before football fans set to return
Sunday's FA Cup semi-final will be played in front of spectators
The re-vamped Olympic Steps at Wembley Park are reaching completion - along with a new public space the size of Wembley Stadium’s football pitch.
Once complete, the 48 new steps, which are 40m wide, will replace the pedway ramps to form a new entrance to the National Stadium.
The project includes four new high-capacity lifts, capable of taking three wheelchairs each up to the Stadium concourse.
Olympic Way - known by football fans as ‘Wembley Way’ - has been widened by 50%, programmable lighting has been introduced, ceremonial banners added and an avenue of 48 new trees from around the world has been planted.
The re-landscaped Olympic Way includes new shops, bars and restaurants, including BOXPARK Wembley.
It comes ahead of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final - being played at the stadium in front of spectators.
It's the second of the Government's pilots for mass events - testing whether they can be carried out safely, without increasing coronavirus transmission.
4,000 people living in the local area have been invited to Sunday's match.
To attend, they need to be vaccinated, have antibodies, or have tested negative.
If it's successful, it'll pave the way for larger events to take place - including the Carabao Cup Final in front of 8,000 football fans a week later.
