Thousands of people are protesting today in Trafalgar Square, demanding an immediate general election along with greater support for ordinary people struggling with the cost-of-living.

The march, called 'Britain is Broken', has been organised by the People’s Assembly, who were also joined by trade unions, community organisations and climate campaigners Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion.

Anti-racism groups also followed the crowds and called for the removal of Suella Braverman as home secretary.

They say this is down to her handling of the recent crisis at Kent's asylum processing centre and her statements on migrants.

The People’s Assembly said in the lead up to the protest said they would be demanding an immediate general election, action on low pay and the repeal of “anti-union” employment laws.

Speakers including Mick Lynch and Jeremy Corbyn are present at the protest.

Cassie Perry, an NHS worker who travelled from Banbury in the Midlands to show her support, said:

"I'm here to protest at the absolute collapse of our public services and the government that is doubling down on the same policies despite seeing what a decade of those policies has done.

"This week at a point where we desperately need an opposition voice, Keir Starmer the leader of the opposition has come out saying how valuable profit is in the public sector. We're seeing in recruitment crises, in collapse of services and in collapse of wages how disastrous that has been.

"So, we're here to just say enough is enough and they've got to change and if the opposition is not going to oppose, then we have to do it ourselves."
