A young couple are now engaged after a man proposed to his unsuspecting girlfriend at Euston station, which holds a special place in their hearts.

Nirmal Chohan, 27, proposed to his girlfriend, Vidya Patel, 26, underneath the station’s departure boards.

They met at their usual meet up point at the station, before Nirmal took to one knee to propose.

Since meeting at a dance event in 2014, Vidya regularly travels on the train from her home in Birmingham to meet Nimal in London.

Euston station holds great sentimental value as it’s where they have met each month throughout their seven-and-a-half long distance relationship.

“The railway has played a big role in our relationship", Nirmal says.

"The trains and Euston station collectively made the distance in our relationship less of an obstacle, and more a warm, homely location where I knew I’d always get to see her again”.

He added, “Euston holds a lot of positive experiences – at times it felt like a Bollywood movie – with the hustle and bustle of people, trains left, right, and centre, and then me trying to woo the love of my life”.

The station’s information board displayed the message: “Vidya Patel, will you marry me?” before Nirmal revealed the ring on one knee.

The couple’s family members were in on Nimal’s surprise and watched the proposal from a hiding place at the station before joining the couple to celebrate.

Speaking of the proposal, Nirmal said: “It has been a dream planning this surprise, for the proposal to happen under such circumstances, with both families present, is truly special.”

Avanti West Coast and Network Rail hosted the surprise proposal at the station, which has been the backdrop for the couple’s reunions throughout their long-distance relationship.

Kathrin Pranga-Wells, Avanti West Coast Lead Station Manager at London Euston, said: “Our West Coast route has played a key role in their relationship, it has been exciting to play our part in this special surprise, we loved seeing the joy and excitement on everyone’s faces!”

Nicholas Holloway, Communications Manager at Network Rail, said: “We were really pleased to play a small part in Nirmal and Vidya’s story and wish them well for the future.”
