The Metropolitan Police have launched a murder investigation after a mother was killed in Bethnal Green.

The alarm was raised by staff at a school after she failed to turn up to pick up her kids.

Police were called at 4.06pm on Thursday 24th March to reports of concern for welfare of a woman at a home in Globe Road.

Officers went to the address with the London Ambulance Service and found a 40 year-old had been stabbed.

Despite best efforts she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her next of kin have been told and are being supported - she's yet to be formally identified though.

Police are treating the death as suspicious with a post-mortem to establish a cause of death due to take place today.

Police say no arrests have been made so far with a crime scene likely to remain in place over the coming days as officers carry out examinations.

Detective Chief Inspector Laurence Smith, leading the investigation, said: “A dedicated team of officers is working around the clock to trace the person responsible for this and my thoughts are with this woman’s family as they come to terms with their tragic loss.

“It is heart-breaking that yet another woman has been killed. All women and girls have the right to feel safe, at any time, day or night, in public or at home, and we will do everything we can to find those responsible for this.

"Tackling violence against woman is one of the Met’s top priorities. Police officers, including forensic specialists, remain at the scene. We will continue to carry out door-to-door enquiries and local people will also see additional police in the area.

“We are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with any information, to contact us. No matter how insignificant you think your information might be, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. It could be key to this investigation.”

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to come forward.
