The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced £6 million of new funding to support grassroot community services for victims and survivors of domestic violence.

The money will help fund life-changing support, including support for victims to find new housing, legal advice, counselling and specialist therapy for children.

The new money is part of a £54 million investment into the Mayor's Domestic Abuse Safe Accommodation program which helps fund services for survivors and their children in safe accommodation.

2.3 million people across the UK over the age of 16 have experienced domestic violence in the last year, according to Crime Survey for England and Wales.

In the capital, there were 86,863 instances of domestic violence recorded to the police in the last 12 months.

Tens of thousands of survivors helped

Since it's launch, the Mayor's DASA program has helped over 23,500 survivors of domestic violence, including vulnerable men, women and children rebuild their lives.

In a statement, Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan said:

“Domestic abuse refuges and community organisations are a lifeline for so many Londoners in need. Despite caseloads growing, grassroot support groups are struggling to survive due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and years of underfunding from the previous government.

“So I’m pleased to be working with partners to fund vital support services for thousands of survivors of domestic abuse and violence who need safe accommodation across our city.

“The investment I have announced today will build on my record £233 million funding to tackle violence against women and girls in all its forms and help community organisations continue their life-changing work with some of the most vulnerable people experiencing domestic abuse so we can build a safer and fairer London for everyone.”
