A man has died following a fire in Kingston upon Thames.

A two roomed flat on the first floor of the building on Elm Road was destroyed by fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from the flat, who was declared dead at the scene by the London Ambulance Service.

Another male resident was rescued by crews from a window using a nine metre ladder, and two residents were treated on scene by paramedics. There are no reports of any further injuries.

Twenty nine residents were evacuated by crews to a place of safety and received support from the local authority.

The Brigade's Control Officers took the first of 12 calls reporting the fire at 2018, mobilising crews from Surbiton, New Malden, Richmond and surrounding fire stations to the scene. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by 2318.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
