Fire crews have been tackling a blaze in Lewisham this morning - which saw eight adults and 3 children rescued.

The fire happened in the ground floor flat of a four storey building, with London Fire Brigade called to Polecroft Lane just before 4 o clock this morning (14/04).

People were rescued from neighbouring flats by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, and were treated by London's Ambulance Service at the scene.

Station Commander Sam Woodhams said: "Crews worked extremely hard to bring the fire under control and in difficult conditions.

"Firefighters are likely to remain at the scene for the next few hours."

The fire was under control by 06.21 hrs, with crews from Forest Hill, Lewisham, Lee Green and other nearby stations attending.

The cause of the fire will be investigated.
