"Kind hearted" Boy, 8 killed in Greenwich motorbike collision

A man in his 40's and a ten year old boy are still being treated in hospital.

Police are continue to appeal for witnesses following a fatal collision in Greenwich which has left an eight year old boy dead.

Officers were called at approximately 19:30hrs on Sunday, 19 February to reports of a motorcycle in collision with three pedestrians on a pedestrian crossing outside the Greenwich Islamic Centre in Plumstead Road, near the junction with Lenton Street.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services one of the pedestrians, an eight year-old boy, sadly died at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A man, aged in his 40s, and a ten year-old boy, who were crossing the road together with the younger boy, were taken to hospital suffering serious injuries. Both remain in a life-threatening condition.

The rider of the motorbike was also taken to hospital. He is a 20-year-old man and his condition has been assessed as not life threatening. There have been no arrests.

The Greenwich Islamic Centre have released a statement: " GIC management, Imams and the whole community would like to express their heartfelt condolences to the family at this time, we are extremely saddened to witness the passing of an 8-year-old boy in a collision with a motorbike last night while walking to the Mosque for isha prayers."

"Anyone who knew the young boy would know how kind hearted, smart and loving he was."

The statement continued: "While no words can ease the loss of the family, we hope that these gestures of sympathy will be a comfort to them, Anyone who knew the young boy would know how kind hearted, smart and loving he was. He would have done anything for anybody, he was truly an amazing person. This is a massive shock to the community."

People living in the area have told us the crossing was "an accident waiting to happen".
