Around 125 firefighters have been tackling a huge blaze at a pub in Trafalgar Square overnight.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the Admiralty pub, with around 20 fire engines brought in to tackle it.

The fire broke out in the basement just before 6pm yesterday (Tuesday 12 July) and crews managed to get it under control by around 10pm.

Roughly 150 people were evacuated from the pub and surrounding businesses, with fire crews saying there've been no reports of any injuries.

An investigation's now underway to figure out what caused the fire.

Station Commander Keith McDermott, who was at the scene said:

“The fire damaged the sub-basement and basement of a pub in Trafalgar Square.

"Due to the arduous, challenging and hot conditions inside the basement we increased the number of fire engines and firefighters at the scene.

"Around 150 people evacuated the pub and surrounding businesses before the Brigade arrived. There has been no reports of any injuries.

There was heavy traffic disruption and we asked people to avoid the area if possible."

The Brigade was called at 5.49pm and the fire was under control by 10.01pm. Fire crews from Soho and surrounding fire stations attended the incident.
