A woman has been jailed for 22 weeks and disqualified from keeping animals for 10 years after a dog was left emaciated and weak when she abandoned him in a Liverpool flat.

Doberman Tyson was so thirsty he drank water from the toilet after he had been left in the Dale Road flat for at least seven days with no food or water.

Court, 28 year old Emma Jane Hinton was sentenced to 22 weeks in prison, was disqualified from keeping animals for 10 years and ordered to pay a £600 fine after admitting two charges of causing unnecessary suffering and not ensuring the needs of the eight-year-old dog were met.

Tyson, was taken into the RSPCA’s care in September 2014 after the charity received a call from a member of the public. He was found to be severely underweight and was riddled with fleas. He was so poorly that he was put to sleep to prevent further suffering the following day.

RSPCA inspector Helen Smith, who investigated the case, said: “Tyson was so weak that he couldn’t even walk up the steps to get to the vets. When he was examined, the vet said that it was one of the worst cases of fleas they had ever seen. There were literally thousands of fleas coming out of his skin and the vet said Tyson was literally being eaten alive by fleas.

“The damage had already been done and sadly he was so weak and ill that it was kinder for him to be put to sleep.

“The vet believed that to be in the state he was in, he would have had no food for at least seven days. Tyson had no water and was so thirsty that he was drinking from the toilet. The toilet bowl was dry when he was found.

“This is such a sad case and it is one which has stuck with me. It is very heartbreaking as poor Tyson would have suffered greatly. There is absolutely no excuse to treat an animal like this.”
