The incident happened in Sandgate Close shortly before 8.30pm. A white car pulled up outside a house and a man got out. He then discharged a shotgun at the property.

A woman aged 54 who was in the downstairs room which was shot at suffered pellet injuries to her head and upper body.

She was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which are serious but not life threatening.

The white car drove off out of the cul-de-sac in an unknown direction. Detectives are treating the incident as a targeted attack on the house that was shot at.

Officers have been carrying out house-to-house enquiries and are examining CCTV from the surrounding area. Crime Scene Investigators are in attendance at the house, which has been cordoned off.

Detective Inspector Lee Wilkinson said: "This was a reckless and cowardly attack on a family home in a busy residential area. A woman has been injured as a result of shots being fired at a window and it is only through sheer good fortune that no-one else was hurt.

"We are determined to catch the person or people responsible and we need the public's help in identifying where this white car went and who was in it.

"The force will be relentless in its pursuit of criminals who use guns on the streets of Merseyside and put lives at risk. We are determined to do all we can to protect our communities by taking firearms off the streets and put the criminals who use them behind bars. "
