A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car in St Helens.

It happened as she was walking on Clock Face Road at around 5:35pm yesterday (Monday 3 November).

The 25-year-old was taken to hospital and remains in a critical condition.

Merseyside Police say the driver of the car stopped at the scene and is helping officers with their enquiries.

An investigation is underway to establish exactly what happened, and officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy, from Merseyside Police's Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:

"Detectives have been in Clock Face today and will continue to be visible for the next few days whilst making vital enquiries to establish exactly what happened yesterday evening.

"This is a tragic incident which has left a young woman in hospital with life-threatening injuries. Family Liaison officers continue to offer support to the woman’s family as we work towards being able to provide them with answers.

"The collision occurred on a busy stretch of road, and I appeal for the public’s help by contacting us if you have information which may assist the investigation. If you witnessed the collision or stopped to help, we would like you contact us as soon as possible.

"CCTV shows footage of a man and woman walking a dog in the area, at the time of the collision. We would be really interested to speak to them as well as anyone else nearby. Alternatively, if you drove through the area at about 5.30pm and had dashcam fitted to your car, please make contact.

"Additionally, I would also appeal to anyone that recalls seeing a white Suzuki Vitara, travelling from the direction of Warrington along the A57 Warrington Road towards Clock Face prior to 5.30pm yesterday, to contact us as a matter of urgency."
