As part of our exclusive investigation into steroid use on Merseyside, Radio City News have discovered more people are now injecting performance enhancing drugs than injecting heroin.

"The increase is with steroid users and those of performance enhancing drugs."

Around 70% of clients using the needle exchange operated by Wirral Ways To Recovery in Birkenhead are steroid users.

The centre provide clean needles and advice for users, to help limit the risk of blood borne viruses and other health issues.

Healthcare Assistant Julie Murphy said:

"We still get intravenous drug users who attend our service - but the increase is with steroid users and those of performance enhancing drugs.

"At this particular hub we have around 200 people a month, which just goes to show what a good service we provide. Of those users - around 70% are steroid users."

You can hear a special documentary "Need For Needles" on Radio City Talk on Friday at 11.30am.
