Counting is soon to get underway of the thousands of ballots cast in yesterday's local elections.

There are four sets of elections that are going on across Liverpool: The race to be the next City Mayor, who will be Merseyside's next Police and Crime Commissioner, the battle to be the next Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region and contests for 31 of the 90 seats on Liverpool City Council.

Results will start to come in this afternoon with more expected on Saturday.

Friday 7th May Results

By the end of today, we can expect to know the results of two sets of elections.

First up is the conclusion of the race to be the next Mayor of the City. The count will begin at Mid-day with results are expected between 3 pm and 4 pm.

Secondly, we'll find out who voters have put in the 31 seats on the city council which are up for grabs. The votes will start to be counted from 3 pm with these results expected to all be in by between 4:30 pm and 6 pm.

Saturday 8th May Results

On Saturday we'll start by finding out who'll become the next Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, the count will begin at 9:30 am with the results expected to be in at 12:30 pm.

Secondly, Merseyside will appoint its new Police and Crime Commissioner with the votes beginning to be counted from 1:30 pm with a result expected by 5 pm.

What can we expect?

Dr David Jeffery from the University of Liverpool is an expert in the region's politics. He said he's not expecting too many surprises but there are a few things to keep an eye on:

"We have the city mayor, which could be very significant if the independent candidate Stephen Yip puts up a good challenge."

"I still think Labour will win though, all the signs are that Labour will win."

"Probably in the second round, though, that would be the most exciting thing that could happen in terms of the local council elections."

"For our councillors, I don't think we'll see much change, there won't be a change in control or who has a majority in Liverpool City Council purely because the Labour Party just have too many counsellors now, as it stands, so we won't see a wholesale shift."

"We might start to see some seats that became much safer Labour Seats following the coalition in 2010, that previously went away from the Liberal Democrats becoming much more marginal, which might have implications in the long term."
