Police are appealing for information after a woman was "violently" attacked and robbed in Wavertree.

Officers were called on Saturday morning to reports a woman was threatened by a man and thrown to the ground while walking down Wellington Road.

The man then stole her handbag and mobile phone but was stopped and chased by another man towards Picton Road.

Officers retrieved the phone and handbag in the area and an investigation is underway to identify the suspect.

The woman suffered bruising to her arms from the attack.

The offender is described as a 30-year-old man, approximately 5ft 5 inches tall, with dark hair, wearing a dark hoodie and dark bottoms.

Detective Inspector Chris Hawitt said: “This was a violent and distressing attack on a woman who was left fearing for her safety after the incident.

“Thankfully another man bravely intervened and helped the woman after the attack.

“I would urge this man or anyone who was in the vicinity of Wavertree Road and Picton Road early this morning just after 12.45am and witnessed the robbery to please contact us so we can bring the offender to justice.

"I am also appealing for residents to check your CCTV and doorbell footage as it may have captured the suspect on Picton Road which could help with the investigation.”
