Universities in Liverpool warn a cocktail of viruses is biggest challenge in years
There are concerns over Covid and so-called freshers flu
As thousands of students descend on Liverpool, universities are warning a cocktail of Covid and freshers flu is their biggest challenge in years.
Face to face lectures are happening for the first time in over a year with things like mask wearing and social distancing still advised in communal areas.
Graeme Mitchell is Senior Lecturer in Public Health at John Moores, he says uni life is having to adapt :
"Traditional university lectures and the traditional university lifestyle of being able to go out to pubs and clubs is all under threat. Little steps now, action taken now to help prevent the number of cases rising really has a significant impact.
"We see a relative high number of cases so it is about managing that process so we don't start to see more cases which causes more problems.
"We wear face coverings to try to stop covid and that hopefully will help to stop other respiratory viruses as well. Ventilation, handwashing, social distancing not only has an impact on covid but can also mean we see fewer cases of things like freshers flu as well".
