Merseyside Police have arrested two 18-year-old men after a laser pen was reportedly shone into the face of a police officer on patrol in Wirral.

At around 10.50pm on Friday 14 June two officers were on patrol in a marked police car driving along Seaview Road in Wallasey when they became aware of a green laser being shone into the car.

The laser hit the face of one of the officers causing him to temporarily lose vision in one eye. The officer was taken to hospital to receive medical attention and later released.

Two males were located on Ormond Street and both were arrested on suspicion of s18 wounding with intent.

They have both been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton said: “Laser pens are not toys and it is vital that people understand the risks they pose.

“Thankfully in this instance the officer was not left with any permanent injury but the consequences could clearly have been a lot more serious.

“I would encourage parents to not purchase lasers for their children and for anyone who knows of anyone using them in a dangerous or antisocial manner to report it to police.” Hear all the latest news from across the UK on the hour, every hour, on Greatest Hits Radio on DAB, smartspeaker, at greatesthitsradio.co.uk, and on the Rayo app.
