One of the main barristers who represented the Hillsborough families during the Warrington inquests has died.

Mark George KC was Head of Chambers at Garden Court North in Manchester, who confirmed the news last night.

A statement on their website reads: 'It is with the greatest of sadness that we announce the death of our Head of Chambers, Mark George KC. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Sue and his sons Tom, Kieran and Joe, and his wider family.

'Mark was a principled advocate, campaigner, and a fighter for social justice as well as the rule of law, whose presence, friendship, strength and wisdom will be greatly missed by all who knew him.'

Mark's son Tom has also paid tribute on twitter:

One Hillsborough survivor tweeted: 'he was calm and relentless' when exposing the lies told by South Yorkshire Police - which ultimately led to the 'unlawfully killed' verdict.

Families who lost loved ones in the disaster have also paid tribute online.
