Transplant Games get underway in Liverpool

For the next four days - the Transplant Games takes place in Liverpool - with the hope it could inspire people to join the donor register.

More than 700 people are taking part in over 25 events across the city with thousands of spectators expected to flock to watch.

For over 30 years, the Games which have taken place across the UK. The Games aim to demonstrate the benefits of transplantation, encouraging transplant patients to regain fitness, whilst increasing public awareness of the need for more people to join the NHS Organ Donation Register and discuss their wishes with their families.

Roisin Griffith's five year old son Joseph is taking part after suffering two liver faliures.

"When they are doing the races, it's taking it into perspective what he's been gone through. He's actually able to compete now, and compete with children who have gone through similar things."

Venues right around the city are getting involved in the four day event, with places in the Albert Dock holding the darts while Liverpool Cricket Club is hosting the cricket, archery and squash.

The Opening Ceremony gets underway at the Exhibition Centre at 18.30pm tonight
