Drivers heading south are being warned of delays, after the M6 had to be shut in Cheshire.

A lorry has crashed into an overhead gantry, forcing the southbound carriageway to be closed from Sandbach to Crewe.

It happened in the early hours between junction 17 and junction 16.

Pictures shared on social media by North West Motorway Police show debris strewn across the carriageway, including boxes of vegetables.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, police said : "The closure on the #M6 between J17 - J16 is likely to be in place for the rest of the morning to allow for recovery, clean up & structural engineers to assess the damage to the bridge."

It's is not yet clear whether anyone was injured in the collision.

Drivers are being urged to find an alternative route as the clean up operation continues.
