1. The Bluecoat This arts venue is set back from the main shopping strip but is not a place to be missed. The oldest surviving building in central Liverpool is home to four galleries of contemporary art. It's a perfect place to discover some inspiring creations during the week and offers fun family craft activities at the weekend. Its exhibitions explain why The Bluecoat holds the reputation it does, with world class artists such as Picasso, Van Gough and Yoko Ono having featured their work at the venue.

2. Get a selfie with the Superlambana With the birth of hundreds of mini superlambananas over the past few years, it's easy to miss Taro Chiezo's original creation. Situated in Tithebarn Street, head down & grab a selfie to kick start your collection before spending a day around the city spotting the mini bananas.

3. Explore Liverpool Cathedral Easily one of the most stunning architectural creations in the city. See the amazing Great West Window and the world's highest gothic arches. The silence of the cathedral makes it easy to pause and reflect in the Lady Chapel. There is so much to see that one visit won't be enough.

4. Otterspool Promenade This often overlooked space is perfect for an afternoon of fun. Popular with kite flyers, take a picnic to have on the grass before a stroll down the promenade. Complete with a brilliant children's play area, this South Liverpool parkland is an ideal place to spend some time.

5. World Museum We can always count on a day at the museum to keep the kids occupied and ourselves fascinated. With exhibition Eye for Colour returning for its tenth anniversary- it's a must do this summer. Start with the aquarium before moving onto the Bug house and watching one of the interactive shows.
