The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms this afternoon (16th May).

The warning covers the majority of the North West as well as North Wales, the Midlands and the North East.

The warning starts at 1pm and will be in place until 10pm this evening.

Emergency services are warning motorists to take care on the roads, as surface water and spray will likely lead to difficult driving conditions.

There's also a chance of some flooding or damage to buildings if any lightning strikes as well as possible losses of power.

There might also be delays if you're using public transport.

How to keep yourself safe on the roads

  • If you're travelling in a vehicle, slow your speed down or avoid the roads altogether
  • Use main roads where possible because they're less likely to be affected by debris
  • Increase your stopping distance because the roads are more likely to be slippery
  • If a road is flooded DO NOT attempt to drive through it, find an alternative route

Keeping yourself safe during a thunderstorm

  • Unplug any non-essential appliances in case of a power surge
  • If you are outside and hear thunder, find shelter - you'll already be in range of where the next flash of lightning may occur
  • If you can't find shelter, and you're in the eye of the storm or feel your hair stand on end - crouch on the floor with your hands on your knees and head tucked between them
  • Try to avoid using the landline
  • Avoid water and be wary of metal objects outside the home
