A taxi drivers suffered a fractured spine after his car was hit by another on Edge Lane on New Year's Day

At around 6.55am on Sunday 1st January, a black Audi A8 was seen driven at high speed along Edge Lane from Low Hill in Liverpool City Centre, where it collided with the rear of a silver Mercedes E250 estate private hire taxi, just after the junction for McDonalds on Edge Lane.

The collision led to the Mercedes leaving the road and flipping over onto its roof, causing significant damage to the car.

The taxi driver sustained a fracture to his spine and two of the occupants suffered slight injuries.

The taxi was carrying a family of four who were visiting Liverpool for the New Year and were being taken to the airport following their stay.

A number of occupants of the Audi fled from the car following the collision and ran towards the direction of Rathbone Road. Enquiries are ongoing to trace these people.

Constable Andy Roper from Matrix Roads Policing said: "It was only through good fortune that this collision wasn't catastrophic for the taxi driver and the family on board, considering the speed of impact and the damage to the Mercedes.

"We are keen to speak with anyone who saw this collision, or may have seen the occupants of the Audi running off immediately afterwards. Any description of these persons and their movements may be key to our investigation.

"I am also particularly interested in speaking to the occupants of a black Hackney taxi and a white estate vehicle (possibly another private hire taxi) that the Audi overtook on Edge Lane moments before this collision."
